Chalie Howes, a University of the Fraser Valley graduate, is an artist, wife, and mother living in Abbotsford, BC. Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1991, she resided in the south until 2009 when she made the move to Canada.
Since starting a family and graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2013, Howes has enjoyed working on a variety of commissions, as well as exhibiting in group settings- in 2015, her work was included in the 3rd Fraser Valley Regional Biennale. And most recently, she exhibited her latest series, The Goldn Years, at the Kariton Art Gallery with photographer Brit Menze.
With every hour of my life focused on my relationship between myself and my children, it only felt natural to pursue this theme through my artwork. Influenced by the internal and external struggles one feels from being a mother, my work exemplifies not only the beautiful sides of motherhood, but also the ones we struggle with.
“The Goldn Years” of childhood have greatly impacted my practice, as it's extremely relevant to the stage of life I am in. Raising young children, I see casts amount of wonder and love through their eyes, a flicker of gold before reason and fear creep into their minds. Gold tones and materials help translate this interpretation of motherhood in my art through many mediums.
I find that motherhood often requires a village, and so does art. So by collaborating with fellow artists, the mediums I use vary to complement the strengths of all artist involved. As the method of kintsukuroi repairs broken pottery with gold, and brings understanding that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken. I too want to bring understanding that even when we feel broken through the tires of motherhood, we have been made more beautiful because of it.
